The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) released a ranking of best Goal Keepers and best Referees for the first decade of the new millennium. After devising a fool-proof method for determining the best in business, Dr. Markus Merk of Germany became the best Referee for the first decade of the 21st Century while battle for the best Goal Keeper is still on between Gianlugi Buffon (Italy) and Iker Casillas (Spain). The best goalkeeper will be determined only after January 2011 when annual world vote for 2010 is completed.
*Establishing The World‘s best Goalkeeper and Referee of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century can only be done on the basis of the annual world vote (by the IFFHS), by taking each year‘s vote as representing 10 % of the value for the decade. Each year many different jurors (countries) have taken part in the vote and, in the early years the jurors voted for the top three places (3 points to 1 point), and only later for the top four places (4 points to 1 point). So it would not be possible to simply add the points awarded in the annual votes.
The IFFHS has devised an equitable method for determining The World‘s best Goalkeeper and Referee of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century. From the annual ranking of the goalkeepers and referees (as a result of the world vote) the IFFHS will take into consideration the "Top 20" for each year and allocate points to each place. So the first-placed receives 20 points, the second-placed 19 points, the third-placed 18 points ... and a point for twentieth place. If the annual world ranking comprises more than 20 goalkeepers and referees each, then the goalkeepers and referees from 21st place onwards receive no points. If the annual world ranking comprises fewer than 20 goalkeepers (based on the fixed rules), no points will be awarded for the unoccupied places. Adding the points from the individual years provides a world ranking for the period 2001-2010. The first-placed goalkeeper and referee in this final world ranking is The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century.*
Determining the best Goal Keepers using the above methodology shows Czech Peter Cech in the 3rd position with 120 points. He in any way cannot be passed nor can he overtake the other two in front of him. However Gianluigi Buffon at 170 points can be overtaken by Iker Casillas who is at 157 points. So the No.1 position is still uncertain but it is certainly going to be either Buffon or Casillas. At No. 4 at the moment is Oliver Kahn (Germany) with 99 points and 7 points below him at No.5 is former Manchester United star and Netherland’s Goal Keeper Edwin Van Der Sar.
Similarly, German referee Dr Markus Merk leads the ranking and cannot be overtaken, making him The World‘s best Referee of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century. But the places of all following 59 referees are still open and can be established only after the end of the 2010 world vote. Six referees still have the chance to become second or third best referee of the 1st Decade. Three of these six are no longer active but the outcome will depend on which places the Italian Roberto Rosetti and the two South Americans Oscar Julián Ruiz and Jorge Luis Larriondo take at the 2010 world vote.
