Sports Federation Should Abide by

With power comes responsibilities but that’s not the case in India. Here, with power comes greed followed by corruption resulting in some easy money making. This might be the reason why sports federation chiefs are against the govt. new policy to curb the upper age limit for the heads of sports federations at 70 years and the tenure at 12 years (maximum three terms).

And with the Delhi High Court rejecting the plea of five sports federation to stay the Centre's new National Sports Policy guidelines issued on May 1, it is almost certain that every sports federation of the country will have to abide by the policy or face de-recognition.

On my personal front I am quite happy with the new policy. Being a believer of youth power and innovative thoughts, I feel it’s time for the old horse to bid good bye to their respective federation. Let the youth’s takeover the baton of responsibilities and carry the Indian Sports forward in a new, vibrant and innovative way. It’s time that we shed our traditional way of thoughts. 70 years is quiet good for our so called sports administrators to hang up their boots.

However, the 12 year maximum tenure does not please me so much. I would rather like no official or chief to occupy the chair for more than 8 years-that is two consecutive tenure. However they be allow to make a comeback and contest for the post after another 8 years since the time they resign from the office. This way change will take place and if the concern person is good enough, then chance of his being re-elected is possible. However he/she should not be allowed to contest if he is over 66 years or he/she should retire from office the day he touch 70 years.

Lastly, the point that I feel the centre has forgotten to include in their new National Sports Policy guidelines is “No politician should be allowed to hold any position within any of the National Sports Federation”. Let sports stay clear of politicians. Let the people who have knowledge about the particular game govern the federation. Athletes are capable enough to shine the Sports. Sports don’t need politicians.

Officials worst hit by the Govt. new policy for the National Sports Federation.
