Interview of India’s Tyson: Suranjoy Mayengbam Singh

Suranjoy Mayengbam Singh, affectionately called Little Tyson became the first Indian boxer to win the Gold Medal in the 51 kg Flyweight Category at the Inter-Continental President's Cup in Azerbeijan in December 2009 and also the first Indian to be declared the 'best boxer' of any Senior Men's Boxing Championships at the world level. The diminutive pugilist from Manipur, known for his aggressive style ended India’s fifteen years long wait for Gold in the Asian Boxing Championship in June 2009. He won gold at the 2010 Common Wealth Games and followed it up with a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2010.

Like all the Sportsmen hailing from Manipur, Suranjoy too was not born with a golden spoon. He had to fight up his way up to this level battling poverty and ignorance. Speaking to Babua Biswas from Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) in Patiala, where the Indian Boxing Contingent are undergoing a preparatory camp, he talk about career, aspirations and life after boxing.
