In a disappointing piece of news for the Indian football fans, India Women’s team failed to progress into the second round of 2012 London Olympic Women’s Football Tournament qualifier played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Bangladesh today.
In a playoff match to determine the group topper, India eves took the lead in the 41st minute through a Bembem Devi goal and went into the break leading 1-0.
Post break, the central Asian outfit came back strongly and scored at brace, pumping in five goals, denting India’s hope of qualifying for the second round qualifiers.
After a 1-1 draw yesterday, both the teams finished joined top with four points each and with identical goal difference. So the need for the play off arose as only the group topper progressed into the second round.
Meanwhile AIFF has announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 each for all the members of the Women’s team which had won the Gold Medal in South Asian Games held in Bangladesh from January 29 to February 8, 2010 and for winning the 1st SAFF Women’s Football Championship held in Bangladesh from December 12 to 23, 2010.
