Mary Kom, the four times World Women Boxing Champion has been named as one of the Brand Ambassador of the Common Wealth Games 2010. Along with her are Abhinav Bindra, Saina Nehwal, Vijender Singh, Samaresh Jung and Sushil Kumar. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Suresh Kalmadi on Tuesday announced the names of the Brand Ambassadors.

The decision of the CWG OC to choose sports persons as brand ambassadors is in itself a boast to the event. Initially Amitabh Bachchan was also considered to be the Brand Ambassador. Announcing the names, Kalmadi said, “These champions have done India proud with their achievements and will serve as remarkable Brand Ambassadors for the Games. Their passion, personality, and presence as well as their amazing pursuit of excellence truly reflect the vision of the Organizing Committee.”

Samaresh Jung, the air pistol expert has won seven gold medals, three silver and a bronze in the last two editions of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and Melbourne while Abhinav bindra shoot to fame in Beijing Olympic where he became the first Indian to bag a gold medal. Both Sushil Kumar and Vijender Singh won bronze at the Beijing Olympics. Saina Nehwal, with three back to back open series in her kitty, is the latest sensation in Indian Sports and she is indeed a great choice for the Brand Ambassador.

Lastly the mother of twins from Manipur, Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, won the World Championship crowns in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2008 besides claiming the Asian Championship prize as many as three times. She is an inspiration across the country and widely respected as one of the finest women champions in India. Incidentally Vijender and Mary were the first athletes to be handed over the Queens baton when it reaches India through the Wagah border.

Seems the lady from Manipur is getting the due recognization she deserves.
