Sunil Chhetri to Play Against Manchester United

It’s a dream come true for the blue eyed boy of Indian football – Sunil Chhetri. He is set to play against Manchester United when his US Major Soccer League (MSL) Club – Kansas City Wizards take on Manchester United on Sunday for a friendly. It’s a proud moment for him as well as for his fans.

According to KC Wizards President Robb Heineman, Sunil will play against ManU as new players will be tested before the MSL begins. If he can impress his Coach with his qualities and abilities in this match, then his chance of playing in the MSL in near future is on the high. A report says he is training well with the team and is close to the first 18 probable.

Coming back to the friendly against ManU, they will be missing some of their key players who represented their respective countries in 2010 WC in S.Africa. But ManU Manager Alex Ferguson will still be able to field a competitive side. Sunil will be seen rubbing shoulders with legends like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes or Man U regulars like Nani, John O’Shea, Darren Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov.

However the speculation over Chhetri being the first Indian to play against ManU is wrong. It was our very own and his role model Bhaichung who played against them in a friendly for his then club Bury FC in August2001. He was lethal in that game to the extent that he scored an offside goal and missed half chances. He even drew an enquiry from Alex Ferguson as to who and where from he is. But unfortunately for Bhaichung, his career in England never took off.

Hope Sunil does not meet the same fate that his role model met a decade ago and kick start his 2nd innings with flying colours and make us all proud.

Wishing Sunil a very good luck.
