At a meeting held between the AIFF and top national Clubs on Wednesday at AIFF Head Quarter in New Delhi, the federation came out with a strong warning for the clubs. National League Clubs, who fail to meet the AFC Criteria by year end, will face expulsion from the local and regional competitions. The federation also asked the club to make sure that players participating in the I-League are not part of State League.
This move, taken by AIFF is part of AFC’s drive to restrict the Asian Champions League to professional clubs. An AFC team will assess the status of the clubs from October 23 to November1 and conduct a workshop for the clubs on November 2, where the clubs will be inform about their shortcomings.
“AFC will inspect the clubs and inform them about their shortcomings in the workshop on November 2” said AIFF General Secretary Alberto Colaco, according to AFC Website. “They will review and inspect the clubs again after the deadline. The clubs who don’t meet the criteria will not be allowed to play in the 2012 edition of the I-League.”
Meanwhile AIFF has decided not to expand the league to 16 teams and continue with the 14 teams. AIFF-XI will be replacing the disband Mahindra United while HAL and ONGC are the two new entrants who fought up their way. Sporting Clube de Goa and Shillong Lajong FC are the two teams relegated to Division – II.
The League will kick start only from the third week of Nov. due to India’s international commitments where 30 players are involved. Another 23 players are to participate in The Asian Games in China and non availability of venue due to cricket matches in Goa and Kerela. The CWG will also restrict the AIFF-XI accessing their venues.
