With exactly 100 days to go for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany, the games governing body on Friday released the FIFA Women’s World Ranking, caused mainly by high caliber friendly matches. The top three teams in the ranking USA, Germany and Brazil retain their position while Japan topples Sweden for the fourth place, their best ever position since the introduction of the ranking in 2009.
Canada, after their impressive run in the Cyprus Cup moved up three places to No. 6 followed by France at No. 7. Placed at No. 8 is Korea DPR, losing two places after not playing any matches. Norway also loses two places and is placed at No.9. England remains at No. 10 while Australia leaps to No. 11 toppling Italy – the highest rank team who hasn’t qualified for the World Cup in Germany.
The other teams who will be lining up in Germany are Mexico (22nd), New Zealand (24th), Nigeria (27th), Colombia (31st) and the African runners-up Equatorial Guinea (61st).
Meanwhile India moved up two places to 54 in the world and is rank 11 in Asia. Thanks to their thumping victory in the SAFF Cup held in December 2010. India’s best ever ranking was in March 2009 when they were rank No. 50.
Quite interestingly, India is rank higher than some football power house like Paraguay (56), Croatia (64), Turkey (65) and Uruguay (69).
With the next ranking to be released in May, Indian eves can hope to move up few more places if they can come up with decent performance in the Olympic Qualifiers.
