Interview of Mary Kom: Five Times World Women’s Boxing Champion

A mother of two, an inspiration for millions and a hope for billion – Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, the diminutive pugilist from Manipur is the epitome of hard work, determination, grit and fortitude. The five times World Women Boxing Champion had nothing but the will power and burning passion that made her scale such height.

Born into a farmer’s family in a village of Manipur, ‘Magnificent Mary’ had learnt to live with poverty early on but her love for the game drove her to defy all odds and gave an overwhelming response to the call of her passion. In all the six World Championship she has participated she won a medal. She started off with Silver in her first appearance but came back for Gold in the second edition and has been invincible there after.

Known as the “Queen of the Ring”, she is the recipient of India’s highest sporting honour – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2009 after being honoured with the prestigious Padmashree award in 2006 and Arjuna award in 2003. Presently in a camp in Patiala, where she is gearing up for the Asian Women Boxing Championship in May, The Golden Girl of Manipur speaks her heart out to Babua Biswas of SportsKeeda.
