Slum Soccer has been invited to be a part of the prestigious Discover Football: International Women’s football tournament to be held in Berlin from the 26th of June to the 3rd of July.
“Out of 38 international organizations which applied for one of the 7 spots on offer, Slum Soccer’s application was viewed favorably by an eminent jury panel chaired by Dr. Theo Zwanziger, President – German F.A.
Other organizations who will be competing in the organization include Star Sports Association, Brazil, The Afghanistan National Women’s Team, New Layout East Women Association, Cameroon, Cercle d’Aide Femme – Enfant (C.A.F.E.), Togo and fellow streetfootballworld network members Espérance (Rwanda), Elena NGO (Cameroon) and Mifalot Hinuch (Israel).
Slum Soccer’s typical participant demographic includes the homeless, recovering drug addicts and alcoholics, children of commercial sex workers, slum dwelling women and children, street paper vendors and the like.
Often these sections are so far removed from mainstream society that it becomes imperative that as a first step, Slum Soccer attempts to reintegrate them and ensure that their rehabilitation is sustainable. The game of Football is the means to that end.
Slum Soccer has been the Indian National Partner to the Homeless World Cup Foundation and has for the past 4 years selected and trained the team to represent the country. This year they selected for the first time, the Indian Women’s team and they came back winning the Fair Play award. Now the women’s team will travel again to Germany.
“This for our participants is much more than just a tournament. It is an experience. It is an opportunity to visit a country they probably have never heard of before and meet people, who they otherwise would never meet, taking them many steps further in their endeavor to bring a change in themselves and their communities” said CEO of Slum Soccer Abhijeet Barse.
